The Bahamas have long been a tourist spot for the rich and otherwise well-off, and the standard of facilities available on the larger islands reflects this – there aren’t any shoddy, run-down resorts here, oh no. Whilst the majority of the large islands are taken up by said resorts and other touristy attractions, there are a surprising amount of smaller islands that have gone undiscovered by the tourist trade and plenty of uninhabited islets to laze the days away on. Everything in the region is some kind of beautiful, the people are friendly and there is even some good old fashioned culture thrown in for good measure – it’s a luxury destination, of that there is no doubt, and it’s a fine one. New Providence Island is the home of the Bahamian capital, Nassau, and is obviously a very popular area for tourists. There are the expected hotels, restaurants, clubs and bars but there is a lot on the side of culture too, with attractions like the water tower at Fort Fincastle, the Ardastra Gardens, and the Queen’s Staircase. Not forgetting, of course, the utterly stunning beachfronts and clear blue waters for all to enjoy, along with many activities, watersports and the like. Elsewhere on the islands are many, many other things to do, places to go and experiences waiting to be had. The Lucayan National Park on the ever-popular Grand Bahama Island, along with the International Bazaar and the Garden of the Groves are all popular visits. The island of Andros has the world’s third largest coral barrier reef in its waters, the Abacos islands are home to a fantastic golf course along with 200 year-old shipbuilding attractions, the islands of Eleuthera, the Exumas, Cat Island and Long Island, amongst the many others, are all home to many different attractions for all tastes. Or just go to an uninhabited isle and waste a day for the fun of it. The Bahamas really do have the luxury thing nailed when they need it, but the real refreshing aspect of the islands is that the genuine aspect isn’t lost in the mix – it’s still easy enough to find true Bahamians doing true Bahamian things, and it never feels like it’s put on for show. The country is beautiful and provides visitors with a holiday destination of a lifetime.
